Into The Jungle by JinYaranda Into The Jungle by JinYaranda
I was looking at art/videos for the new Tomb Raider game, and, well...I remember a while back (don't remember WHERE) that someone'd made Daring Do in a similar vein. So, I wanted to try out that idea, too!

This was a bit of experimentation for me, again. I blocked out shadows roughly, and refined them before putting down any color. You'll notice they're sharp shadows, and monotone. Didn't layer them like I usually do. Thoughts?

Also, I do not know if I could submit this to any of the groups on dA; they all have that "no gore/blood" thingy. D: Help??

This is amazing. It inspires certain feelings without needing to go to extremes. Terror without extensive gore or monsters because you're scared of whatever did that to her. Curiosity as to what exactly she's doing there that's worth risking her life for. Awe at just how far she'll go to do what she wants to get done. And that's just a few... I could sit here for maybe half an hour typing all these out, but I don't want to drown you in praise meant to encourage. Still, great work, this picture is amazing.

Haha, thank you for the breakdown; it's nice to hear WHY people like my stuff, and what they think of it exactly, instead of just a two word response. Much appreciated.

No problem. It's the least I could do for someone as talented as yourself.

Actually, one of my friends mods a big MLP group and said this would be OK. Search for the group Friendship-is-Magic or just go here. [link]

As far as blood/gore goes, this is not as bad as I have seen in several groups! You show Daring Doo in a way that is expected for an adventurer! Beat, bruised, and bloodied is par for the course! Your work is just fine!

Most of the groups accept some blood, they just don't like disassembled or mangled ponies.
#Ponies-For-Everypony is a great and friendly group and should accept it no worries. Can't speak for the others. not a member of them.

Ah Tomb Raider. One of my favourite video game series. Miss the original ones (1 through Chronicles) so much. Such fun games.
Lovely art Jin. Don't normally comment on art with blood and such, but made an exception for you.

I just was worried, 'cause a lot have "no gore/mature themes" or "should be at maximum Disney-level violence." So, yeah. D:

I don't really like the character overhaul they did for the newish Lara (the newest one looks awesome, but her voice is way forced British accent). The original was the best. Sassy as hell, and with the danger to back it up. Ah, well, I'm glad you decided to comment. :D

Original "Look at all the geometry I give" Lara is best Lara :D
Probably not going to play the new one. All the ones past Angel of Darkness (included) have been a bit of a let down.

And see, P-f-E took the image just fine. One of the most friendly groups of all the groups I ever contacted, as far as administration goes.

Old Lara: Nope, don't give a fuck.

New Lara: My parents are DEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAD (/Batman)

Whee! I was looking at another group that would accept it, but they have a 1 pic / 7 days limit. Which is stupid.

This is why one doesn't go traipsing through barely explored regions treasure hunting.
One is bound to get lost and/or severely injured.

I like it. It captures the desperation of a traveller lost in an uncharted wilderness, likely bargaining for her life from a figure we can't see as it looks like she's looking at someone and talking to them.
Though it could be delirium from a tropical illness.
We'll never know...

I love your style of drawing :D Your ponies look exactly the same as how i imagine them in 3d. This is just great.
And about that group thing, i think it isnīt gore. Yes, she is hurt, but this picture isnīt about getting hurt. :)

:D 3D ponies! Can you imagine? :O

Well, most won't even accept violence or blood, so...gah!

Your ponies are from different angles and with a bit of imagination it isnīt so hard to see them in my mind completely 3d, but i donīt know how to transfer my imagination on the paper :D
Aaand, well, i donīt accept violence or gore on ponies too, but i donīt take this one as violence just because there is a bit of blood. I take as violence when someone actualy draw hurting of ponies, like cupcakes. When i saw that wicked fanfic, i was most disgusted and still canīt understand what kind of crooked mind would create such a thing like that, but from this image, Daring Do looks wounded but more alive than ever. I donīt know how to explain it in english xD I mean: She is an adventurer and she probably just ran away from some danger and got some scratches. But she is safe now. :)

Not sure what to say about groups rejecting it for gore/blood. I guess just draw what you want to draw? Anyway, the best technique I've found so far is: sketch->block out shadows in black and white->block out color over the sketch->add basic shading and details->add refined shading and details. Organize layers from background to foreground, with background being the lowest. And don't be afraid to make a new layer to test something out before committing it, that way if you don' t like it you can just delete the layer.

Yeah, you used a hard brush for shading instead of a soft one. It shows.

I can't tell if it's better, or worse, since my lines are so sketchy.

I think it's good. When people use too much soft brush, their pictures get so blurry that it's impossible to tell what's going on. Your background looks a little fuzzy, but Daring Do looks just fine.

Ah, well, I am a cheater when it comes to pictures. XD I've no real experience with backgrounds, so I get really hesitant about doing any kind of detail work on them. D:

Unless you're painting a really detailed scene, backgrounds are just there to accentuate the main characters in your picture (Daring Do, in this case). Once I finish my character sketch, I just mess around with the lines and shading in the background (black-and-white first) until I get something that looks interesting, then I build off that. "Oh hey, that gray lump looks kind of like a bush, so I'll add some bushy details until it looks like a REAL bush". And occasionally you'll get into it enough that you lose track of time and end up with something looks really nice.

That's not to say that you can draw and color your character perfectly, then add a background later and expect it to look good. Well, maybe some people can, but I've tried that and it's never worked for me.

I just feel really unsure about non-organic drawing. Well, rather, non-animal drawing. I can't draw trees, leaves, mountains, buildings...any of that. Heck, my animals (other than ponies) are getting a touch rusty.

This is making me think of the gorefic I've just started writing as a request for a friend. Gore is most certainly not something I've ever written before and nor do I intend to make it something I do regularly, but I must say pictures of yours like this are not only excellent as art, they are also good to stare at when writing a gorefic :iconcomputerguyplz::iconcomputerguy2plz:
